Food Adventure 1

So a few years ago I started looking into Vietnamese cuisine, mostly because of the Vietnamese people surrounding me and all the people who’ve tried the food. I initially started my google searches with phō, which is a type of soup dish distinguished from others by its rice noodles. As I was looking around, I eventually came across this type of sandwich known as banh mi. It’s composed of traditional Vietnamese meats and veggies (e.g. cilantro, carrots, cucumber) which are served on a baguette, which resulted as an effect of the French colonization in Vietnam. My first experience with this dish was at a small shop in Elmhurst called Joju. It takes the traditional concepts of a banh mi and incorporate some modern and local flare. The one I had was was the caramel pork with a well done egg. It was a little messy since the pork is ground up but it was super tasty and surprisingly filling. I highly recommend going out and trying Joju, then even have a traditional banh mi with ham, headcheese and pâté. I wanna go back and try the bulgogi.

  1. Dude!!! The bulgogi banh mi is hella delicious. Have you tried their fries? Their fries are actually pretty bomb, and although they’re a little pricy, pretty worth. Also, if you’re ever craving some milk tea (bubble tea) and you’re at Joju, go next door to Panda Cafe, it’s pretty good! To be honest, I really enjoy that entire section of Elmhurst. One of my favorite discoveries in Queens!

  2. I know this place well. You can also get a runny egg on your sandwich if you are daring. I also think I had kimchi fries there that were good.

Could be a cool spot to do a review about for class, but finding out more history about Vietnamese cuisine would be important. There’s a long colonial history there worth exploring.
