Ok folks, I’m about to tell you about the absolutely best (American) Chinese takeout spot in the whole Bronx, Boe Sun restaurant. For you folks who don’t know your way around the Bronx, getting here is really simple: Take a Nereid Ave bound 5 train (make sure it’s this one, which runs along White Plains Road and NOT the the Dyre Ave bound 5 train, you’ll end up in some part of the Bronx that I’ve never seen before), take it to Allerton Ave, get go the SE exit (i think that’s the right staircase), when you walk down the stairs, wrap around the corner where the bank is and just walk up about 3 blocks and Boe Sun will on your left, next to this new empanada shop. Now it’s got your basic decor, with the typical assortment of stock photos tapped all over the walls but don’t be fooled, this restaurant is full of nuances that may seem negligible but to me they have a huge impact. Something that’s “small” on the spectrum is that they use string beans and corn in their vegetable fried rice, which adds a crisp feeling to your bites and adds nice texture to the rice. But the real kicker is how the restaurant caters to the abundance of Latinxs surrounding them by offering a few Spanish dishes. On the wall you can see a picture of “Bisteck Palomilla with Green Plantains”. The steak is a Cuban based dish and tostones they depict are very common in many cultures but is a staple in Puerto Rican cuisine. The dish my mom always gets is chicharron de pollo with green plantains – not to be mistaken with the “fried chicken chunks” the restaurant offers, which i find funny considering how many times I’ve seen that phrase used to translate the Spanish dish. I know i haven’t said much to explain why this is the “best (American) Chinese takeout spot in the whole Bronx” but I think I’ve said all that I need to. Obviously I think the food is tasty and I love all the crazy combos they have – there’s a combo where you can get chicken teriyaki on a sticks, boneless spare ribs and chicken wings, all over some rice – but that’s not what I wanna sell the restaurant on. I want you all to come here knowing that the establishment knows just how to fit in with its environment. The shop has been open for at least as long as I’ve been alive, so soon to be 23 years, and I hope it can go over for another 23, at least.
